Opening

On this show, we encourage and inspire you to live your most badass life – so it seems only fitting that today’s episode dives into Part 1 of the book You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero.

Goodreads, my favorite book tracking platform, describes the book as a refreshingly entertaining how-to guide. The #1 New York Times Bestselling Author and world-traveling success coach, Jen Sincero, serves up 27 bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, sage advice, easy exercises, and the occasional swear word. If you’re ready to make some serious changes around here, You Are a Badass will help you: Identify and change the self-sabotaging beliefs and behaviors that stop you from getting what you want, blast past your fears so you can take big exciting risks, figure out how to make some damn money already, learn to love yourself and others, set big goals and reach them—it will basically show you how to create a life you totally love, and how to create it now.

By the end of You Are a Badass, you’ll understand why you are how you are, how to love what you can’t change, how to change what you don’t love, and how to use The Force to kick some serious ass. (Goodreads – You Are a Badass)

How You Got This Way

Today, I will be sharing insight from Part 1 of the book – “How You Got This Way.” You’ll hear the following takeaways:

How Your Subconscious Made You Do It

Jen Sincero doesn’t sugarcoat it: “It’s not your fault that you’re fucked up. It’s your fault if you stay fucked up, but the foundation of your fuckedupedness is something that’s been passed down through generations of your family.” Your subconscious mind absorbs beliefs and patterns from your early years, shaping who you are. These ingrained beliefs run your life until you become aware of them and make a conscious effort to change. Understanding that your subconscious has been running the show allows you to take control and start rewriting your script.

The G Word

Sincero introduces the concept of Source Energy, the life force within and around us all. “Develop an awareness of, and a relationship with, the Source Energy that’s surrounding you and within you (which is all the same energy).” By connecting with this energy, whether you call it the Universe, God, or something else, you tap into the limitless potential that’s available to you. It’s about aligning your frequency with what you want to attract into your life. The more you focus on positive energy and gratitude, the more you’ll see those vibrations reflected in your life.

Present as a Pigeon

In a world full of distractions, staying present is crucial. Sincero advises, “Be more present in the moment—there’s no need to focus on the past, as it will cause you depression, or to the future, as it will cause you anxiety.” Like animals and children, who naturally live in the now, you can find peace and clarity by appreciating the present moment. The more you focus on what’s happening right now, the more opportunities will arise, and the more you’ll be able to enjoy life’s richness.

The Big Snooze

Sincero introduces “The Big Snooze,” which is essentially your ego. “The Big Snooze will do everything it can to stop you from changing and growing, especially since you’re attempting to obliterate the very identity that you and everyone else has come to know as ‘you.’” This part of you resists change because it’s comfortable with the status quo, even if that comfort is keeping you stuck. To overcome the Big Snooze, you need to push past your fears, step out of your comfort zone, and embrace the person you truly want to be.

Self-Perception is a Zoo

Finally, Sincero challenges us to rethink our self-perception. “We torture ourselves incessantly, and for what purpose? If we can glimpse the glory (and I know you can), why do we waste our precious time giving any energy to the other options? Wouldn’t life be so much more fun, productive, and sexy if we fully embraced our magnificently delightful selves?” She urges us to stop the self-sabotage and start embracing the badass within. Life becomes much more enjoyable when you start celebrating who you are instead of criticizing yourself.

Conclusion

You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero offers a roadmap to breaking free from self-imposed limitations and stepping into your greatness. By understanding how your subconscious has shaped you, connecting with Source Energy, staying present, overcoming the Big Snooze, and embracing your true self, you can start living the life you were meant to live.
