39: Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen – A Magical and Heartfelt Book Club Discussion | Session 1 Badass Books and Besties

There’s something about summertime that calls for a book like Other Birds—a story full of magic, mystery, and just the right touch of healing to settle into your heart. For our latest Female Fiction Reads book club pick, we dove into Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen, and it gave us everything we love in a book: lyrical writing, quirky characters, a setting that feels alive, and themes that linger long after the final page.

This story, set on the fictional Mallow Island off the coast of South Carolina, weaves together magical realism, grief, found family, and second chances. It’s exactly the kind of novel that invites a deeper conversation—and that’s exactly what we’re doing in this two-part series from our book club inside Badass Book Besties.

In this first session, we focused on the beginning of the book—meeting the characters, uncovering their initial secrets, and digging into the emotional undercurrents that tie them all together. Whether you’ve already read it or are curious to dive in, you’ll find plenty to love here.

The Story Behind Other Birds

Other Birds begins when Zoey, a young woman fresh out of high school, arrives on Mallow Island to claim the apartment her late mother left her. She moves into a cobblestone building called The Dellawisp—named after the tiny turquoise birds that live in the surrounding trees and seem to whisper their own kind of magic.

Zoey doesn’t expect much—certainly not to find herself surrounded by such an eclectic and secretive group of neighbors. There’s Charlotte, who makes chocolate and carries a hidden past. There’s Frasier, the building’s caretaker with more wisdom than he lets on. There are estranged sisters, a reclusive chef, and yes—ghosts. Real ones.

But what’s so compelling is that the story doesn’t rely on big dramatic twists. Instead, Sarah Addison Allen takes her time to slowly reveal the stories hiding behind each character. Every person has a reason for being at The Dellawisp. And as their histories unfold, it becomes clear that each of them is healing from something they’ve lost, running from something they can’t forget, or searching for something they don’t know how to name.

A Setting Full of Quiet Magic

Mallow Island is practically a character in its own right. From the start, there’s a feeling that this island is a kind of in-between space—between past and future, pain and healing, reality and something just a little otherworldly.

The descriptions are lush but never overwhelming. Addison Allen’s writing has a soft, lyrical quality that makes even the ordinary feel enchanting. It’s not just the ghosts or the mysterious birds—it’s the way everything seems to shimmer with possibility, with memory, with meaning. This is what makes Other Birds feel so special. It doesn’t shout. It whispers.

As we discussed in our book club session, this kind of magical realism isn’t about spectacle—it’s about atmosphere. It creates a space where healing feels possible, even inevitable. And that’s what keeps you turning the pages.

Characters Who Carry Their Stories Quietly

One of the biggest themes that emerged in our discussion was how quietly powerful the characters are. No one in Other Birds is showy. They’re broken in their own ways, but still deeply human.

Zoey, our protagonist, is naïve and hopeful but not in a way that feels annoying. She’s trying to understand who her mother really was and, in doing so, figure out who she’s becoming. Her journey is tender, and so many readers in our community related to that feeling of standing on the edge of adulthood, wondering what to take with you and what to let go.

Charlotte, meanwhile, was a favorite in the group. She’s mysterious, soft-spoken, and yet her story carries incredible emotional weight. Her connection to the magical elements of the book—her ability to see the unseen—made for great conversation about trauma, trust, and the protective masks we wear.

The other tenants are just as rich: the sisters who haven’t spoken in years, the grieving chef who isolates himself, the spirits who refuse to leave. Each of them adds a thread to the tapestry that is The Dellawisp.

Themes We Explored Together

During Session 1, our book club talked about so many of the book’s deeper themes, and the most prominent were:

  • Grief and memory: How we carry our losses with us, and how they shape who we are.
  • Found family: The beautiful, unexpected relationships that form when we stop hiding and start showing up for each other.
  • Letting go of what no longer serves us: Whether it’s an identity, a person, a regret, or an old narrative—we talked about the courage it takes to release the past.
  • Trust and vulnerability: Several characters had to unlearn their instincts to isolate or protect themselves in order to grow.

There’s a lot of emotional depth in this book, and yet it never feels heavy. Instead, it feels like an invitation to reflect—and in many cases, to heal.

Why This Was the Perfect Summer Read

We all agreed: Other Birds was a perfect pick for this season. It’s rich but gentle, mysterious but comforting. It doesn’t demand anything from you—it simply invites you in. It’s the kind of book you want to read slowly, maybe on a porch with a breeze and a drink in hand.

It gave us space to talk about things that really matter, like how we move forward after loss, how we open our hearts to others, and how we begin to see ourselves more clearly through the stories of those around us.

Join the Conversation

This was just Session 1 of our two-part discussion on Other Birds—and trust me, there’s even more to come. In Session 2, we dive deeper into the emotional arcs, the character reveals, and the way Sarah Addison Allen brings all these threads together into something truly beautiful.

And if you’re not already part of the Badass Book Besties community, now’s the time to join us. We meet twice a month inside our Female Fiction Reads Bookclub to explore incredible stories written by women—books that spark connection, growth, and the occasional ugly cry. You’ll get access to live discussions, reflection questions, a supportive space to share your thoughts, and, of course, new book besties.

Final Thoughts

If Other Birds taught us anything, it’s that healing doesn’t always come in a grand moment. Sometimes, it arrives in quiet conversations, in shared meals, in the warmth of a stranger who becomes family. That’s exactly what this story gave us—and what our book club aims to give every single time we meet.

Thanks for being here for Session 1. Be sure to listen to the episode if you haven’t yet, and get ready for a powerful wrap-up in Session 2.
